Art is like humour but without the laughter- JONATHAN MONAGHAN

  • Bitforms Gallery 131 Allen St New York, NY, 10002 United States (map)

I am a 28-year old artist born and raised in NY. I work with high-end computer graphics software to craft surreal virtual environments and objects.

Imagery in my work often references wealth and authority, while drawing on a broad range of sources, from advertising to Baroque architecture to video games. While the animations are sleek and realistic, the narratives are disjointed and ambiguous, offering a nightmarish edge in which the viewer remains trapped in an endless loop of seductive but ultimately vacuous simulation where meanings don’t quite materialize.

Creativity results from the willingness to be absurd. With humour you unexpectedly put together disparate elements that don't make sense, it’s like a snow plow for your neural pathways and so deeper connections are revealed. Art is like humour but without the laughter.

Upcoming show: Escape Pod, March 22nd - May 3rd at bitforms gallery, NYC
